As part of our ongoing policy engagement, Life After Abuse Foundation (LAAF) paid a courtesy visit to Honorable Temitope Adewale to discuss the establishment of the inaugural Ministry of Men Affairs in Lagos State. This initiative aims to address the unique challenges faced by men and boys in our society, promoting gender equality and inclusivity.
During the meeting, Honorable Temitope Adewale shared his concerns about the pressure to protect and provide (PP), which affects many men, leading to high blood pressure and unreported violence due to shame, stigma, and lack of support. He highlighted the need for a dedicated ministry to address these issues and provide support services for men.
We were inspired to hear that Honorable Temitope Adewale was the driving force behind the bill for the establishment of the Domestic & Sexual Violence Response team, a landmark achievement that has provided critical support to victims of domestic and sexual violence. He acknowledged the wonderful work done by the Ministry of Women and Poverty Alleviation Domestic Violence Unit in ensuring that both men and women who suffer domestic violence gain access to help and support.
Honorable Temitope Adewale suggested renaming the ministry to the Ministry of Men and Women Affairs, which aligns with our goal of promoting gender equality. This rename would ensure that both men and women receive equal attention and support in addressing their unique challenges.
