President, Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Mr. Nduka Obiagbena has called on Nigerian journalists to imbibe the culture of integrity which has uphold the profession in times past.
Nduka who is also the chairman Thisday Newspaper gave this charge today at the formal launch of the Online Publishers Association of Nigeria (OPAN) held in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
Charging journalist to set their agenda rightly and play pivotal role in the the new trend of events, Nduka called on online media practitioners to imbibe the ethics of the profession always.
“The world wide Web is a platform without laws. It is a platform where you can get anything, anywhere and anytime. Their is no rule for joining or practicing to it accommodates all, both good and bad.
“To distinguish ourselves in this kind of platform, I advice all journalist to report facts the way it is and speak the truth always. We should all return to the age-long virtues of journalism.”
Speaking further, he noted that the new trend of online journalism is economically advantageous to media practitioners provided they give the right content.
“As an online publisher, if you have the right contents guided by truth,factual reporting and upholding integrity, you will be able to build right brands, get your audience and monetise your platform to make good businesses. However,it is not only about the money but about your name and integrity.” he stated.
He also commended trending online publishers and enjoined them to engage more in investigative journalism.
