The global journalism community is in mourning following the sudden passing of Diana Fuentes, the Executive Director of Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE). Fuentes, a trailblazing leader and fierce advocate for press freedom, died after a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.
As the first person of color to lead IRE, Fuentes is being remembered not only for her professional accolades but for her profound impact on diversity, equity, and the safety of journalists worldwide.
A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience
Fuentes took the helm of IRE in April 2021, navigating the organization through challenging periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her guidance, IRE saw significant membership growth and maintained a sturdy financial foundation, a feat colleagues attribute to her skill and grace.
Beyond the balance sheets, Fuentes was widely respected for her commitment to inclusion, ensuring that underrepresented voices within the industry were heard and prioritized.
“Diana was a staunch supporter of our work,” stated the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism (CCIJ).“We admired her fierce commitment to diversity and her unflagging advocacy for journalist freedom and safety. We will miss her warmth, generosity, and abundant kindness.”
Global Impact and Advocacy
Her influence extended far beyond the United States. Fuentes was a frequent presence at international summits, including the 2023 Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Gothenburg, Sweden. There, she stood in solidarity with journalists facing persecution, including those supported by the CCIJ following wrongful detentions.
Her career was marked by numerous high-profile roles and honors including the NAHJ Hall of Fame when she was inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Hall of Fame in 2022, she served in leadership roles with the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas and the Society of Professional Journalists, and was recognized as a dedicated editor and teacher who mentored generations of investigative reporters.
A Lasting Void in the Industry
The news of her death has prompted a wave of tributes from organizations across the globe. Colleagues describe her as a treasured member of the journalism community whose legacy will be defined by her tenacity in reporting and her compassion for her peers.
Fuentes is survived by her family, to whom the journalism community has extended its deepest condolences.
