The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said it would soon deployed a “Special Squad” of Anti Kidnapping Officers to the South West region in order to combat banditry, killings and incessant kidnappings.
Adamu Muhammed, Inspector General of Police (IGP) made the disclosure on Wednesday in Akure, Ondo state capital.
Muhammed, who was represented by a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Operation, Mr Abdulmajid Ali said the officers are currently undergoing training at a camp in Abuja and will soon be dispatch to all the South west states.
He spoke while paying a courtesy visit to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu together with tm Assistant Inspector General in charge of zone 11, Leye Oyebade and the State Commissioner of Police, Undie Adie.
According to him, the Police has decided to redesign the security apparatus in the South West states in order to effectively fight all sorts of crimes in the region.
He revealed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was not being comfortable with the reported cases of kidnappings on the major roads of the Southwest.
“I decided to start with Ondo state before I travel to Ekiti and Osun states because Ondo is one of the focus state in recent.
“And I believe we need to sit down with my officers and see how we brainstorm heads together here.
“I want you to know that security is one of the first pillar of any government in doing any service to the people.
“If security is not provided, there won’t be peace in that area and the governor too will find it difficult to operate.
“We are aware of our responsibility. The Inspector General has put in place a very strong team that are on training now.
“And in the next two weeks, they will be deployed to Ondo and other south west states that has been the place of focus.
“We are deploying them here to also take charge of security and to work with our men on ground”, he explained.
He noted that by the time the officers on trainings are deployed to the field, south west region will continue to enjoy peace.
The Police chief, however, observed that security should be everybody’s business stressing that the Nigeria Police Force is keen in making the more country safer.
Speaking, Governor Akeredolu said that his government was worried about the security challenges in the state.
Akeredolu who was represented by his Deputy, Agboola Ajayi explained the need for the police to double up in their effort and intelligence in combating crime.
He advised the police to embrace digital policing in order to curb kidnapping and other violent crimes in the country.
