The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released a revised timetable for the 2027 General Elections, moving the dates for the Presidential and National Assembly polls forward following the enactment of a new electoral law.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the Commission announced significant adjustments to the electoral calendar to ensure compliance with the newly enacted Electoral Act, 2026, which replaces the previously guiding 2022 Act.
New Election Dates for 2027
According to the Commission, the timeline for the national elections has been realigned. INEC has resolved that the Presidential and National Assembly Elections will now be held on Saturday, 16th January 2027. This is a shift from the previously scheduled date of 20th February 2027.
Furthermore, the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections are scheduled for Saturday, 6th February 2027. This date was originally set for 6th March 2027. The decision to review the schedule was necessitated by the repeal of the old act and the introduction of adjustments to statutory timelines in the new legal framework.
Revised Key Milestones and Campaign Periods
In line with the newly approved Schedule of Activities for #NigeriaDecides2027, INEC has outlined critical dates for political parties and aspirants. The Commission has emphasized strict adherence to these timelines. The window for the conduct of Party Primaries, including the resolution of any disputes arising from them, will open on 23rd April 2026 and close on 30th May 2026, c ampaigns in the media and public space for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will officially commence on 19th August 2026, while campaigns for Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will begin on 9th September 2026.
INEC Warns Parties on Strict Compliance
The Commission has issued a stern warning to all political stakeholders regarding the legal limits of politicking. As stipulated by the Electoral Act, 2026, all campaigns must conclude 24 hours prior to the opening of polls.
In the statement, INEC emphasized that political parties are strongly advised to adhere strictly to these timelines. The electoral body reiterated its commitment to enforcing compliance with the provisions of the new law throughout the election project.
Osun State Governorship Election Rescheduled
In a related development, the Commission also addressed the pending Osun State Governorship Election. Details regarding the specific new date for the Osun poll are expected to be outlined in the comprehensive schedule, ensuring it aligns with the broader adjustments made to the electoral calendar.
