Independent National Electoral Commission has promised to create 2,400 polling booth in Laogs to ensure that the booths get closer to the people during election and to ensure there that are not more than 500 voters in a unit.
The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Adekunle Ogunmola made this known to newsmen at a workshop on the upcoming distribution of permanent voter cards organised for key officers of INEC by the United Nations Development Project (UNDP), in Lagos.
Ogunmola said the distribution of voter cards would capture the new units, adding that the new units when created would bring the whole number of polling units in the state to about 10,865.
“We have also received the delineation report from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and have given them out to our electoral officers across the councils to study. We will use the ones we consider relevant,” he said further.
He also debunked rumour that Election Commissioners in the country were ganging up against the chairman of the Commission, Professor Attahiru Jega.
“It is unfortunate that such story has been published, but I wish to state here that there is no rift between us and the chairman,” he mentioned.
According to Ogunmola, there should not have been controversy over the number of polling units allocated to each state, because they were allocated on equality basis for all states.
“This is the final phase of the distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards and the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide,” he said.
The Commissioner commended the UNDP for organising a free training workshop and urged the staff to take the training with heart to ensure quality delivery of their tasks before, during and after the election.
The UNDP National Elections Expert for Nigeria, Professor Bolade Eyinla said the UNDP sponsored the workshop as part of its good governance project.
