The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has cautioned that signing the Peace Accord does not automatically guarantee a peaceful election in Edo State. He emphasised the need for genuine commitment to upholding the agreement’s terms.
Yakubu made this statement on Wednesday during the signing of the Peace Accord by political parties ahead of the 2024 Edo governorship election.
The Peace Accord was signed in the presence of former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Inspector-General of Police, representatives from the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, the Oba of Benin, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), political party leaders, candidates, and their running mates, as well as the media.
Yakubu urged political parties and candidates to understand that merely affixing their signatures to the document would not ensure a peaceful election.
“It is your commitment to its implementation that matters,” he said. He further called on them to pass the message of compliance to their supporters, noting that this was the best way to honour the efforts of the National Peace Committee.
