The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to growing public concerns regarding the schedule for the 2027 General Elections, hinting at a potential review of the announced dates to accommodate national holidays and religious observances.

In a statement released on Friday, the Commission clarified that the initial dates February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Assembly polls were chosen in strict adherence to long-standing internal regulations.

Legal Framework vs. Stakeholder Concerns

According to the Commission, the scheduling follows a 2019 regulation which mandates that federal elections take place on the third Saturday of February during an election year, with state-level elections following two weeks later.

However, the announcement of these specific dates sparked immediate pushback from various stakeholders, who noted that the timeline coincides with significant national observances that could hinder voter turnout and logistical operations.

The Commission assured that they haven taken due notice of concerns expressed by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances.

Potential Legislative Intervention

Recognizing the potential impact on electoral participation, INEC indicated that it is not ruling out a change to the calendar. The Commission is currently engaging in high-level consultations to find a middle ground that respects both the law and the cultural realities of the electorate, while ensuring that any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

Commitment to Inclusivity

The electoral umpire reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and inclusive process, assuring Nigerians that the ultimate goal is a credible election where no citizen is disenfranchised by the calendar.

While the legal third Saturday rule remains the current standard, the Commission’s willingness to seek legislative help suggests a flexible approach to the 2027 roadmap. INEC has promised to keep the public updated as these consultations progress.
