A major tragedy was narrowly averted at Community Grammar School, Oke Ayo, in the Ibadan South West Local Government Area, following the structural collapse of a classroom block. 
The incident has sparked fresh outrage among parents and staff, who describe the state of the institution as a disaster waiting to happen.
Despite the school’s reputation for academic resilience, the physical infrastructure has deteriorated to a life-threatening level. The collapse occurred just as the rainy season intensifies, raising fears that more buildings within the premises may give way.
A Pattern of Neglect
Stakeholders revealed that the school administration has made numerous appeals to the Oyo State Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). While officials have reportedly conducted site inspections since 2025, no physical repairs or reconstructions have commenced.
“The entire school environment has become a death trap for both students and staff. We have engaged successive commissioners and boards, but all we see are inspectors taking notes while the walls crumble. Yesterday, we almost lost lives; we cannot wait for a funeral before the government acts.” the report stated.
Call for Urgent Intervention
The collapse has placed a spotlight on the Ibadan South West LGA and the state government, with advocates questioning why increased fiscal allocations have not reached critical educational infrastructure.
As the only mixed secondary school in the immediate vicinity, its potential closure or further decay would leave hundreds of students without access to affordable education.
Community leaders are now calling directly on Governor Seyi Makinde and Hon. Kehinde Akande to prioritize an emergency rehabilitation project. The demands from the Oke Ayo community are clear:

Education Under Siege
The irony of the situation remains the school’s performance; despite learning under collapsing roofs and in constant fear, students have continued to maintain high academic standards. However, observers warn that the extinction of this vital public institution is imminent if the state government does not move beyond inspections and begin concrete construction work.
For now, the children of Oke Ayo remain in a precarious position—stuck between their desire for an education and a school building that threatens their very lives.
