The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has signaled a decisive shift toward fiscal self-reliance, with the Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, calling for an immediate and urgent offensive against illicit financial flows (IFFs).

The Minister warned that the persistent drain of capital through illegal channels is actively weakening public finances and forcing the nation into an unsustainable reliance on foreign and domestic debt.

A Strategy for Domestic Resource Mobilization

While declaring open the 5th Special Technical Committee Sub-Committee on Tax and Illicit Financial Flows, Edun emphasized that the era of passive revenue collection is over. Under the direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the administration is currently implementing sweeping reforms designed to strengthen tax administration and broaden the national revenue base.

The Minister noted that these reforms are not merely about collection, but about ensuring the stabilization of the macroeconomy. By plugging the leakages caused by IFFs, the government aims to redirect billions into critical infrastructure, public services, and long-term economic development.

The Minister’s Perspective

Mr. Wale Edun underscored that transparency is the bedrock of the government’s new economic architecture.

“Improving domestic resource mobilisation is critical to funding infrastructure and public services. Our goal is to create a more transparent and investor-friendly environment by retaining capital within our borders and strengthening our financial systems to unlock sustainable growth.”

Impact on the National Economy

For the public sector and the broader Nigerian economy, the mandate from the Ministry of Finance is clear: systemic fortification. The government’s focus is now fixed on preventing the unauthorized flight of wealth from the country, enhancing the oversight capabilities of tax and financial regulatory bodies, and transitioning away from borrowing by maximizing internal revenue generation.

As the Technical Committee begins its deliberations, the focus remains on building a resilient framework that ensures Nigeria’s wealth remains a tool for its own sovereign advancement.
