The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan African University (PAU), has officially flagged off a three-day national Master Training Programme in Abuja aimed at revolutionizing teacher professional development through mobile learning technology.
The high-level workshop, titled “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative,” running from July 21 to July 23, 2026, focuses on equipping educators with modern, flexible digital skills.
A Regional Push for Digital Education
Supported through funding by the Government of Japan, the UNESCO-IICBA initiative spans five African nations: Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, and South Sudan. The effort aims to expand access to high-quality continuous professional training, prioritizing female educators and administrative leaders who often face systemic hurdles in accessing career advancement opportunities.
By harnessing mobile technology, the program addresses persistent educational bottlenecks including geographical barriers, inadequate physical infrastructure, and rigid schedules. Educators will now be able to access continuous training resources anywhere and anytime through a low-data, offline-friendly digital platform.
Building a Future-Ready School System
Speaking on the strategic importance of the collaboration, the Federal Ministry of Education underscored the vital role digital innovation plays in raising national teaching standards and improving classroom outcomes.
“Accessible professional development is essential to strengthening learning outcomes and building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready education system,” stated Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.
The ongoing master training in Abuja marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to modernize its basic and secondary education sectors through technology-driven reforms.
