In a major move to revolutionize the nation’s tertiary education landscape, the Federal Government has finalized plans to establish a Coventry University branch campus in Nigeria. The initiative, driven by a Transnational Education (TNE) partnership, aims to provide Nigerian students with access to prestigious British degrees without the financial burden of traveling abroad.

The campus is slated to be situated in Alaro City, Lagos State, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to internationalize local education.

Strategic Partnership and STEMM Focus

The announcement comes as the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, CON, joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the United Kingdom for high-level deliberations with university leaders and global investors.

The new institution will prioritize high-demand fields, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

Crucially, the Ministry confirmed that all degrees awarded at the Lagos campus will be equivalent in status and recognition to those conferred at Coventry University’s UK campuses.

Affordability and Timeline

A primary objective of this partnership is to mitigate the high costs associated with international schooling. By localizing world-class curriculum, the government expects to reduce tuition and living expenses for families while curbing “brain drain” and boosting graduate employability.

“We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” stated Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa during the UK engagements.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, admissions are projected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, pending final regulatory approvals from relevant academic bodies.

Nigeria as a Global Knowledge Hub

Supported by the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, the project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader vision to position Nigeria as a premier regional hub for innovation and skills.

Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to expanding access to globally competitive education, ensuring that Nigerian graduates are equipped to compete in the modern global economy.
