The Federal Government has set up a tactical committee to review the 2009 Agreement reached between the government and the university-based staff unions as part of its efforts to end the protected strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, disclosed this to journalists after a closed-door meeting that lasted for over two hours.
Goong said the committee will look into issues of increase in the salaries of the university lecturers and come up with workable solutions to end industrial action by lecturers of public universities.
He noted that the ‘no work, no pay’ stance against striking lecturers, which had become one of the major disagreements between ASUU and the central government will also be reviewed.
The committee is expected to review and work on the recommendations of Prof. Nimi Briggs’ committee.
The 14-man committee comprises pro-chancellors, vice-chancellors, and other stakeholders.
