The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora on the occasion and urged citizens to use the celebration as an opportunity to reflect on values that promote peaceful coexistence.
The minister said Eid ul Mawlid should remind Nigerians of the values of compassion, humility and service to others, noting that these qualities are needed in the country at this time.
He also encouraged Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to reflect on these values and contribute to building a more peaceful and united society.
Tunji-Ojo Urges Nigerians to Embrace Peace, Unity
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo urged Muslims and other Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace and cohesion across the country.
He described national unity as a shared responsibility and called on citizens to contribute to peaceful coexistence regardless of their religious or other differences.
The minister also urged Nigerians to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid.
He said the values associated with the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad remained relevant to the challenges facing society.
Tunji-Ojo encouraged citizens to demonstrate compassion and consideration for one another, stressing the need for Nigerians to work together to strengthen peace and unity.
FG Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Lives, Property
The Minister of Interior also restated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country.
He assured Nigerians that the government remained focused on maintaining peace and security during the celebration and beyond.
Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and respect the rights and safety of others throughout the holiday.
He called on Nigerians to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace and preventing actions that could threaten public order during the celebration.
The minister wished Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora a peaceful Eid ul Mawlid and called on all citizens to make the occasion an opportunity to promote understanding, unity and peaceful coexistence.
