The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of two million packs of sanitary towels and learning materials to girls in public basic education schools across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to improve menstrual health, school attendance and retention.

The initiative, tagged Flow with Confidence, Keeping Every Girl in School, was launched on October 12, 2026, by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, as part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child.

The statement signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, said the programme aims to address challenges associated with menstrual health and access to essential learning materials that may prevent girls from attending school regularly.

Beneficiaries will receive sanitary towels, school bags, shoes, exercise books, mathematics textbooks and other writing materials.

FG to Sustain Initiative Through UBEC, AGILE Project

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising children in national development and praised the First Lady for her advocacy for girls’ education.

Alausa also disclosed that the programme would be institutionalised through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the World Bank-supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.

The arrangement is expected to support the continued implementation of the initiative and strengthen efforts to improve girls’ access to education.

Minister Stresses Link Between Menstrual Health and Education

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, stressed that no girl should have to choose between education and menstrual health.

Her position highlights the importance of addressing menstrual health needs as part of efforts to ensure that girls can participate fully in classroom activities and continue their education without avoidable interruptions.

The distribution of sanitary products and learning materials is intended to address some of the practical challenges girls face in accessing and remaining in school.

UBEC Reaffirms Commitment to Girls’ Education

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Aisha Garba, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to removing barriers to girls’ education.

The Federal Ministry of Education also urged state governments and education authorities to ensure transparent distribution and accountability in the implementation of the programme.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to support girls’ education by addressing menstrual health needs and providing essential school supplies to learners in public basic education institutions.

The statement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.
