In a proactive move to safeguard the nation, the Federal Government has convened a high-level emergency preparedness meeting to review Nigeria’s readiness against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The strategic session, held in Lagos, was convened under the direct instruction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure robust preventive measures are established before any potential outbreak.
The high-powered meeting was led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila. It brought together a coalition of critical stakeholders, including the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), top health authorities, security agencies, and emergency response officials to fortify the nation’s health defense lines.
Strict Surveillance at All Points of Entry
Although health authorities have reassured citizens that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria, the government is adopting a zero-tolerance approach to loopholes. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized that the country is aggressively reinforcing its defensive parameters to prevent the virus from breaching national borders.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the Ministry of Interior is deploying advanced technology and structured decision-making mechanisms to enhance monitoring and surveillance protocols across all entry points. This covers rigorous screening at all airports, seaports, and land borders nationwide.
Inter-Agency Collaboration and Lessons from 2014
To guarantee a watertight defense system, the Federal Government is building a unified front involving state governments and key regulatory bodies. The collaborative effort integrates the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure seamless intelligence sharing and screening execution.
Officials are banking on Nigeria’s historical victory over the disease to guide their current strategy. Speaking on the nation’s determination to avert a crisis, Minister Tunji-Ojo stated:
“As government, we will continue to work seamlessly as a team with state governments, the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, and all relevant agencies to ensure this threat does not rear its ugly head in our dear nation. Together, drawing lessons from our successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, we are confident that Nigeria will once again rise to the challenge and protect our country.”
With these fortified measures, the Federal Government aims to replicate its acclaimed 2014 Ebola containment success, reassuring the public that the nation’s health security infrastructure remains fully alert and capable.
