The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has announced the restoration of normal traffic flow on the Abuja–Lokoja Expressway following a weekend gridlock caused by a standoff between truck drivers and military personnel.
The disruption reportedly began after a truck’s windscreen was smashed during an altercation, prompting truck drivers to block a section of the highway. The action led to severe congestion along the corridor, leaving motorists travelling toward Lokoja and other destinations stranded for several hours during the festive period.
In response to the situation, Senator Umahi directed the immediate opening of already completed sections of the expressway and approved the deployment of necessary measures to ease traffic and reduce hardship for road users.
The directive, which was implemented on Sunday, December 21, 2025, helped to decongest the affected areas and restore free movement. The Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, Engineer Patiko Isah, confirmed that officials from the ministry, working alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other security agencies, restored traffic flow at about 2:00 a.m.
Speaking on the development, the Minister appealed to motorists to remain patient, orderly, and cautious, especially during the peak holiday travel season. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable road transportation across the country.
Senator Umahi also extended goodwill messages to Nigerians, wishing them a peaceful, safe, and joyful festive celebration.
