At the TownHall Meeting convened by the United Action for Change (UAC) and held today at the Oranmiyan Hall of Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, His Excellency the Vise President, Prof. Yemi Oshibajo, while responding to questions from representatives of the disability community at the meeting reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to
ensuring the PWDs are effectively provided for in all policies and programmes of Government.
The Vise President said that the appointment of 2 PWDs as Special Advisers to the President was a clear indication that the government was going beyond words to action.
The Vise President stated that the Special Advisers were charged with the task of developing programmes and strategies which will lead to the establishment of Federal disability vocal institutions or agencies which will in turn support the Federal Government in developing and
implementing disability inclusive policies and programmes.
The VP added that he had “met with the Special Adviser, the umbrella body for PWDs in Nigeria and other DPOs” to initiate the process of developing policy frameworks in this direction.
Finally, the Vise President acknowledged the National Disability Bill in the National Assembly which according to him “is an executive bill” which when passed will be fully implemented. He also acknowledged the landmark disability law and policies in Lagos state which the Federal
government will endeavour to replicate at the national level.
Just to also add that the VP stated that PWDs (especially those who can’t work) will be beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N5000 social cash transfer scheme.
The VP, in his response, however failed to acknowledge the need to facilitate and subsidise the local production of assisting aides and technologies which costs Nigerians over N50 billion annually.
