The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy could prevent 1.2 million deaths each year caused by pollution linked to fossil fuel combustion, according to experts.
As the world marks the UN International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies on September 7, the UN SDGs Professional Support Group for Africa is calling attention to the harmful effects of fossil fuel-derived pollution.
Air pollution from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas releases hazardous pollutants, including particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. These pollutants severely degrade air quality and pose serious health risks, particularly to respiratory and cardiovascular systems. With rising global temperatures, the situation is growing more critical, making the protection of human health and the planet an urgent priority.
Transitioning to renewable energy presents a “double opportunity,” offering both improved air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable alternatives like solar, wind, and hydropower provide a path to a cleaner and healthier environment.
Additionally, technologies like ‘Waste to Energy’ could further cut fossil fuel dependency, helping to lower air pollution, mitigate climate change, and strengthen energy systems.
“Transitioning to renewable energy sources is a critical imperative for mitigating the devastating impacts of fossil fuel-derived pollution, which claims 1.2 million lives annually. By harnessing the power of solar, wind, and hydro energy, we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and protect the health of people and the planet,” said Emeka Orjih, Advisor to the UN SDGs Professional Support Group for Africa.
Orjih, who is also a Senior Technical Advisor to Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, emphasized the need for collaboration among governments, businesses, and individuals to accelerate the shift to renewable energy.
“Investment in green technologies, supportive policies, and public awareness are critical to driving this transition.”
“All hands must be on deck in committing to a future where clean air is a right, not a privilege,” he said. “By embracing renewable energy, we can ensure a safer, healthier world for the present and future generations.”
