The Edo State Government is facing mounting pressure to address a brewing crisis at the Igbinedion Educational Centre, following disturbing reports of student bullying, intimidation, and suspected cult-related activities.

Concerned stakeholders are calling on Governor Monday Okpebholo to take decisive action to restore safety and academic integrity to the renowned institution.

Allegations of Intimidation and Cult Activity

Recent reports from within the school walls suggest a deteriorating moral climate. Allegations of systematic bullying and the presence of unhealthy student groups have raised alarms regarding the psychological and physical safety of the student body.

“Schools are meant to be safe spaces where young people are nurtured academically and morally, not environments where fear, intimidation, and unhealthy influence thrive. The current situation demands an urgent, uncompromising response from the authorities.” A spokesperson for the advocacy group monitoring the situation stated.

Infrastructure Decay: A Breeding Ground for Misconduct

Beyond the behavioral issues, the physical state of the school has come under intense scrutiny. Large sections of the campus, including several classroom blocks, are reportedly abandoned and dilapidated. Critics argue that these neglected spaces have become hideouts for misconduct, providing secluded areas where unsafe activities can occur unchecked due to poor oversight.

Demands for Temporary Closure and Rehabilitation

To ensure the safety of the children, advocates are proposing a temporary closure of the school to facilitate a comprehensive security and structural assessment. Key demands presented to the Edo State Government include:

  • Immediate rehabilitation of all unused and crumbling infrastructure.

  • Securing empty spaces to prevent unauthorized student gatherings.

  • Deployment of trained security personnel to monitor the premises and eliminate recruitment into illicit groups.

Focus on Reform and Minor Welfare

While the call for accountability is firm, stakeholders emphasize that the students involved are minors. The proposed intervention highlights the need for professional counseling and mentorship programs alongside disciplinary measures.

The goal is to address the root causes of these behaviors through early intervention and guidance, redirecting students toward discipline and positive character development.
