The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has continued to spread, with six provinces and 60 health zones now affected, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The outbreak, declared on May 15, initially affected just one province and two health zones. By September 1, the affected area had expanded to about 240,000 square kilometres, an area roughly the size of the United Kingdom and five times the size of Switzerland.
Over 6,000 Confirmed Cases
Africa CDC said the outbreak has so far recorded 6,206 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,009 deaths, highlighting the growing pressure on health authorities and response teams.
Despite ongoing efforts by the Congolese government and its partners, the health agency said the situation remains a major concern.
“We are not yet where we need to be,” Africa CDC said, stressing that the outbreak continues to evolve.
Africa CDC Maintains Response
The agency described the DRC outbreak as its highest priority, with response efforts being carried out in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners.
Africa CDC said the partners are working alongside the DRC government to strengthen the response and contain further spread of the virus.
“We will not relent until this outbreak is brought under control,” the agency said.
