While the strengthening of primary healthcare remains a central pillar of Nigeria’s national health agenda, the Sabon Ruwa Health Post in Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State stands as a stark contradiction to these goals.
A recent field report by Tracka, a public service delivery monitoring organization, has uncovered a facility in a state of total collapse, leaving thousands of residents at risk.
The health post, which serves as a critical first point of contact for the community, has transitioned from a place of healing to one of significant hazard.
Medical Treatment in the Open Air
The physical infrastructure of the Sabon Ruwa Health Post is currently dilapidated, characterized by leaking roofs and structural instability. The situation is so dire that medical treatment is frequently conducted in the open area, exposing patients and health workers to the elements and compromising the basic principles of clinical hygiene and patient privacy.
The facility is currently operating with a total absence of essential equipment and hospital beds, rendering it incapable of providing even the most basic level of inpatient or emergency care.
The Human Cost of Proximity
Despite the obvious dangers, the facility remains active solely due to its location. Residents of the Sabon Ruwa community expressed a sense of desperation, noting that they are forced to patronize the health post simply because it is the closest available option to them.
“Residents say they only use this facility because it is the closest to them,” the report stated. “It however continues to endanger them,” highlighting the tragic irony where a healthcare center has become a source of further health risk for the vulnerable population it is meant to protect.
Demanding Urgent Federal Intervention
The current state of the health post has sparked urgent calls for accountability and renovation. Activists and community members are now directing their appeals to the highest levels of health administration in the country.
“We implore the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Federal Ministry of Health to facilitate the immediate renovation of this facility,” Tracka noted in an official statement.
The neglect of the Sabon Ruwa Health Post underscores a broader systemic gap in the maintenance of rural health infrastructure. Stakeholders are demanding that the NPHCDA intervene to provide the necessary funding, equipment, and structural repairs required to transform the health post into a safe and functional environment for the people of Bunkure LGA.
