Despite the senate committee’s admission that the oil and gas sector has lost over $28 billion in investments, it has proven exceedingly difficult for the National Assembly to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill into law inspite of the great hope it holds for Nigerians.
This has caused civil society organizations working in the area of transparency and accountability in the sector in mobilizing to occupy the National Assembly over the delay in the passage of the PIB following the politicization of the bill by NASS.
Mr Monday Osasah in a statement on behalf of CSO’s said opacity and other challenges in the sector made the Federal Government to initiate a reform process as far back as year 2000 which culminated in the PIB that was transferred to the National Assembly for passage into law.
The occupation will commence with a rally across the streets of Abuja on the 25th of February. The group enjoins Nigerians to come out enmass and be part of the final push for the passage of the bill.
Civil societies involved are Centre for Democracy and Development, African Network for Environment and Economic Justice,Civil Society Legislative and Advocacy Centre, Spaces for Change, Publish What You Pay, Environment Rights Action, Social Action, Protest to Power Movement and the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development.
