The educational future of children in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State is hanging by a thread due to the horrific condition of Otorho Nursery and Primary School.
Public accountability organization Tracka has sounded the alarm, revealing that the primary school classrooms are completely dilapidated, leaving young students entirely unprotected from harsh weather elements. Learning has become virtually impossible as children are forced to sit through classes under the scorching sun and beating rain, severely undermining their right to a basic, quality education.
A Shared Crisis and Five Years of Neglect
Compounding the crisis, the primary school pupils are not alone in their struggle. Secondary school students are currently sharing the single ruined building because they have nowhere else to go. This forced cohabitation stems from a deeper administrative failure in the community.
Half a decade ago, a dedicated secondary school facility was put under construction to serve the area, but the project was abruptly abandoned at the roofing level five years ago. Since then, zero efforts have been made to complete the structure, leaving it to rot while hundreds of students suffer the consequences.
Demands for Urgent Government Intervention
Civic tech and transparency platform Tracka has formally called upon the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside local representative Honorable Augustine Ogedegbe, to step in immediately. The group stressed that children desperately need a conducive environment to learn and thrive.
“This is the state of Otorho nursery and primary school, Ethiope East LGA, Delta state. The classrooms are completely dilapidated. Students are exposed to a harsh learning environment; under the sun and in the rain, learning is almost impossible. We implore your office and the Delta State Government to facilitate the renovation of Otorho primary school and completion of Otorho secondary school,” Tracka stated.
The community and accountability advocates are now jointly urging the Delta State Government and the Federal Ministry of Education to intervene, allocate emergency funds, and prioritize the immediate renovation of the primary school alongside the completion of the abandoned secondary school project.
