Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has inaugurated the Healthy Food Policy Youth Vanguard (HFPYV) program, a youth-focused initiative aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and resisting corporate attempts to compromise public health through unhealthy food products and practices.
The two-day event, held in Lagos, trained and inducted 28 young Nigerians from across the country as HFPYV pioneers. CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, emphasized the importance of engaging youths in food justice advocacy, as they are the primary target of corporations prioritizing profits over health.
Expert guests and facilitators, including Joy Amafa of the Global Health Advocacy Initiative (GHAI) and Dr. Francis Fagbule of the University College Hospital and University of Ibadan, led discussions on public health, policy engagement, and effective advocacy strategies.
The inductees expressed enthusiasm for the training and pledged to utilize their knowledge to promote healthy diets and lifestyle choices. They plan to leverage social media, schools, and community programs to raise awareness about the impact of sugar consumption and processed foods on public health.
The launch of HFPYV marks a significant step towards empowering youths to drive positive change in Nigeria’s food landscape and promoting a healthier future for all.
