The East African Community Heads of state recently met at the state house conference hall in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to discuss the crises presently plaguing Burundi.
The summit, which was attended by the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Saidi Djinnit¸ expressed sympathy with the people of the republic of Burundi following the violence in Bujumbura and other parts of Burundi which has resulted into death of many people, influx of refugees to the neighbouring countries, destruction of property and paralyzing business in some parts of Burundi.
Those present also expressed concern on the continued political impasse in Burundi and called for a postponement of the elections for a period not less than one and a half months, while also appealing to institutions in Burundi including the parliament to facilitate this postponement.
The summit called on all parties to stop violence and exercise restraint during the postponement of the elections and emphasized the need for disarmament of all armed youth groups allied to political parties in the country.
Finally, the summit expressed its solidarity with the people of Burundi and decided to actively accompany them in the exercise of their democratic rights.
Those present at the summit were; President of the United Republic Of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the Republic Of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of The Republic Of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, Minister Of External And International Cooperation representing The Republic of Burundi, Hon. Alain Nyamitwe, Minister for East African Community, representing The Republic Of Rwanda, Hon. Valentine Rugwabiza, South African President, Jacob Zuma and Chairperson of The African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.
