In a massive push to eradicate childhood mortality, 113,000 children across Bauchi State have received their first dose of the malaria vaccine.
The initiative, spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), marks a critical milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to integrate malaria immunization into routine healthcare.
The exercise focused on children aged 5 to 21 months, a demographic most vulnerable to the severe effects of the disease. Beyond the immediate vaccinations, the program served as an intensification exercise, designed to strengthen the state’s overall childhood immunization framework and prepare the nation for a wider domestic rollout.
Scaling Healthcare Capacity
A significant portion of the initiative involved a massive logistics and training operation. To ensure the success of the rollout, 1,292 health workers were trained across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs). This surge in expertise has directly strengthened 1,152 health facilities spanning 323 wards within Bauchi State.
By equipping local staff with specialized knowledge on vaccine administration and storage, the WHO and its partners are building a sustainable infrastructure that extends far beyond a single campaign.
A Commitment to Every Child
The impact of the four-day exercise is measured not just in data, but in the long-term health of Nigerian families. Health officials emphasized that the current progress is only the beginning of a larger national strategy to curb the burden of malaria, which remains one of the leading causes of death among children in Sub-Saharan Africa.
“Every dose is more than a number. It is a child protected and a family reassured. WHO will continue supporting Bauchi State and Nigeria to ensure no child is left behind as malaria vaccination expands,” the WHO Nigeria office stated following the exercise.

The success in Bauchi serves as a blueprint for the rest of the country. By merging the malaria vaccine introduction with routine childhood immunization, health authorities are ensuring that lifesaving treatments become a standard expectation for every household. With each of the 113,000 doses administered, Nigeria moves closer to a future where malaria-related illness and death are significantly reduced, fostered by strong international partnerships and local dedication.
