The African Union Permanent Mission to China has stepped up efforts to streamline and strengthen strategic cooperation between African institutions and Chinese partners to fast-track the continent’s development.
This development follows a high-level bilateral meeting in Beijing, where Ambassador Rahamtalla Mohamed Osman, the AU Permanent Representative to China, received a delegation from the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) Human Capital and Institutional Development (HCID) team. The delegation briefed the envoy on their ongoing diplomatic mission to align Africa-China cooperation across vital sectors, including health systems, industrialisation, human capital, and skills acquisition.
Advancing Africa’s Health Sovereignty and Local Pharma
At the heart of the Beijing discussions was the urgent need to advance the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and rapidly expand local pharmaceutical manufacturing across the continent. By leveraging Chinese technical expertise and investment, the AU aims to reduce Africa’s reliance on imported medical supplies and secure its healthcare supply chains.
The two delegations explored concrete steps to establish a Continental Centre for Human Capital Development and foster deeper South-South cooperation to bridge critical knowledge and technology gaps. Preparations are also underway for the upcoming Second African Industrial Skills Week, an initiative designed to equip African youth with the technical capabilities required to drive modern industrial growth.
A Unified African Strategy for China Engagement
The meeting underscored the necessity of a united front when engaging external partners. Ambassador Bah strongly advocated for a cohesive, continent-wide framework to ensure that bilateral agreements yield maximum impact for African citizens.
“We must maintain a coordinated African approach to engaging Chinese partners if we are to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063,” Ambassador Bah stated during the briefing. “Through sustainable industrialisation, technology transfer, and robust human capital development, this collaboration will pave the way for long-term economic resilience.”
