In a robust address on Saturday, Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), issued a stern warning against any attempts to rig next week’s governorship election in Edo State.
Speaking at the grand finale of the PDP’s campaign rally in Ekemwan, Edo State, Abubakar emphasised that the state should not be compared to Lagos, where, according to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been known to manipulate elections.
The former Vice President rallied the people of Edo to vigilantly protect their votes and ensure their integrity is maintained throughout the election process.
“If you recall, four years ago, there were threats against us. They claimed they would prevent us from winning in Edo State. But what did we do? We demonstrated that ‘Edo State is not Lagos,’” Abubakar declared.
He continued, “This time, we will prove once again that ‘Edo is not Lagos.’ They cannot steal votes here. Therefore, guard your votes, defend them, and escort them to ensure they are counted. Ensure your results are announced correctly. If you do this, no external force will alter your votes.”
Abubakar concluded his speech with a motivational call to action, urging the electorate to stay resolute: “You are winning next week, do you agree? Remember, ‘Edo is not Lagos.’”
Edo State will head to the polls next Saturday to elect its next governor. The key contenders are Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the APC, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
