Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following the road accident that claimed the lives of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, with state governments confirming that the athlete personally paid his final respects to the deceased before their repatriation.
The governments of Lagos and Ogun states, in a joint statement on Tuesday, disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited the funeral home in Lagos to honour the two young men, described as his close friends, who died in the accident on December 29, 2025.
According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late Tuesday after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue recovery from home. However, officials noted that he remains “heavy-hearted and deeply emotional” over the loss.
The two state governments once again expressed condolences to the families of Ayodele and Gami, praying for the repose of their souls and strength for their loved ones in what they described as a “very sad and painful loss.”
Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State also acknowledged the widespread public concern and outpouring of sympathy that followed the incident, thanking Nigerians for their support.
The statement further appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for what it described as “fatherly support” throughout the period following the accident.
Special commendation was also given to the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality of care in attending to Joshua and other injured persons.
The statement was jointly signed by Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, and Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor.
