International human rights watchdog Amnesty International has strongly condemned a violent crackdown by security forces on peaceful demonstrators celebrating Democracy Day at the Unity Fountain in Abuja. The incident took a critical turn when prominent human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore collapsed during the chaos and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The rights group described the incident as a targeted assault on citizens who were merely exercising their constitutional rights. According to witnesses, what began as a peaceful assembly quickly deteriorated when security operatives moved in to disperse the crowd, utilizing measures that Amnesty International has labeled as entirely disproportionate and reckless.
Demand for Immediate Investigation
In a swift and scathing reaction to the incident, Amnesty International Nigeria demanded an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the actions of the security operatives. The organization emphasized that the deliberate targeting of Sowore represents a dangerous escalation in the suppression of dissenting voices within the country.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the reckless attack on peaceful protesters today during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja in which human rights activist Omoyele Sowore collapsed and was subsequently taken to a hospital,” the organization stated. “The deliberate targeting of Sowore must be investigated. Such targeting of activists solely for exercising freedom of assembly is unlawful and shows utter disregard for the rule of law.”
Tinubu Government Accused of Human Rights Violations
The global rights organization did not mince words regarding the broader implications of the crackdown, accusing the current administration of actively shrinking the civic space. The group asserted that the Nigerian authorities are clearly using violence as a tool to stifle dissent and dismantle basic democratic freedoms.
Amnesty International further stated that President Tinubu’s government has failed to demonstrate any meaningful commitment to upholding Nigeria’s constitution. By violently disrupting peaceful gatherings, the administration is reportedly violating its international human rights obligations, which strictly guarantee citizens the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
