The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has successfully leveraged London Climate Action Week 2026 to solidify global partnerships and aggressively push Africa’s priorities in climate finance, high-integrity carbon markets, and sustainable development.

Throughout the high-level summit, the agency championed Africa’s evolving role from a passive supplier of carbon credits to an active architect of global carbon governance, ensuring the continent secures the investment needed for long-term economic transformation.

Unlocking Africa’s Carbon Potential Through Local Expertise

A major milestone of the week was the official presentation of the AUDA-NEPAD Validation and Verification Body (VVB) Accelerator Programme. The initiative directly tackles a critical bottleneck in the African green economy: the severe shortage of accredited, domestic validation and verification bodies. By actively building localized technical expertise and expanding the pool of African-accredited VVBs, the program aims to drastically reduce project transaction costs, shorten verification timelines, and strengthen market integrity, allowing African carbon projects to enter international markets much faster and more efficiently.

Shifting from Suppliers to Market Architects

During an interactive session with the Coalition to Grow Carbon Markets, AUDA-NEPAD leaders emphasized that the continent must look beyond merely exporting credits. The agency stressed that African nations must actively shape the governance, standards, and architecture of global markets to ensure they create local jobs, protect rich biodiversity, and directly support vulnerable communities.

Incentivizing Climate Policy and Strengthening Market Infrastructure

At the World Bank’s Policy Crediting event, AUDA-NEPAD contributed to pivotal discussions on rewarding governments that implement aggressive climate strategies. The agency explored how policy crediting can unlock massive new streams of climate finance by rewarding economy-wide emissions reductions, supporting national goals like sustainable agriculture, industrial decarbonization, and the clean energy transition.

Furthering this momentum, AUDA-NEPAD joined forces with policymakers, financial institutions, and investors at the FSD Africa Carbon Accelerator Programme for Africa (CAPE) event. The stakeholders mapped out practical measures to upgrade market infrastructure, improve investment readiness, and lower entry barriers to successfully attract robust private sector capital into high-quality African carbon projects.

Securing Global Demand and Ensuring Good Governance

Recognizing that a thriving market requires a balance of supply and demand, AUDA-NEPAD held strategic B2B meetings with Value Network Ventures and leading international carbon buyers to connect African project developers with long-term, high-integrity demand. Additionally, a bilateral meeting with the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) focused on establishing sound governance, transparency, and institutional capacity-building across African Union Member States.

Moving forward, AUDA-NEPAD remains committed to collaborating with global governments and the private sector to ensure Africa plays a defining role in the global green economy, fully aligned with the prosperous vision of AU Agenda 2063.
