Africa CDC Moves to Secure Health Sovereignty Through African-Led R&D Investment

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched a strategic push to transform the continent’s healthcare landscape by prioritizing intellectual property (IP) ownership and sovereign manufacturing.

Breaking the Cycle of Dependency

In a high-level convening held this week, the Africa CDC brought together experts alongside Global Health Ecosystems, Enabel (the Belgian development agency), and the GIZ African Union Office.

The primary focus was the development of a bold, Africa-led investment proposition for health innovation. This initiative aims to dismantle the long-standing dependency on foreign medical supplies and build the robust infrastructure required for lasting health security.

A Vision for Intellectual Property

Central to the discussions was the concept that research conducted within Africa must remain under African ownership. By securing intellectual property generated through local Research and Development (R&D), the continent can foster its own homegrown diagnostics and vaccines. This shift is viewed as a critical step in ensuring that African health systems can remain resilient and self-sufficient during global health crises.
