In a landmark move toward health independence, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has officially launched the African Strategic Advisory Group on Genomics (ASAG). This new continental body is designed to provide independent, multidisciplinary technical guidance to ensure that genomic science becomes a cornerstone of public health across the African Union.
The establishment of ASAG signals a transition from emergency response to a long-term, strategic governance framework for both pathogen and human genomics.
“The launch of ASAG marks a pivotal step in advancing our vision to democratize access to genomics,” the report stated. “This group will ensure that genomics is deployed ethically and responsibly, keeping African leadership, ownership, and equitable benefit-sharing at the very center of our continental initiatives.”
Strengthening Disease Surveillance and Response
The formation of ASAG builds upon the significant progress made by the Africa Pathogen Genomics Initiative, which has already enhanced sequencing and data systems to combat threats such as mpox, cholera, malaria, and antimicrobial resistance.
By consolidating these gains, the advisory group will guide the application of genomics toward precision public health. This includes not only infectious disease surveillance but also addressing the rising burden of non-communicable diseases through advanced clinical genetics and local manufacturing of medical countermeasures.
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Health Security
Aligned with the broader agenda of Africa Health Security and Sovereignty, ASAG will offer high-level recommendations on:

Expert Leadership and Governance
The inaugural ASAG consists of eight world-renowned experts in fields ranging from precision medicine to ethics. During their first meeting, the members elected Prof. Christian Happi as Chair and Prof. Ghada El-Kamah as Co-Chair.
The board includes distinguished scientists such as Prof. Ambroise Wonkam, Prof. Leon Mutesa, Prof. Tulio de Oliveira, Prof. Nicky Mulder, Prof. Charles Rotimi, and Dr. Yosr Hamdi. These experts will serve in their personal capacities, providing evidence-based advice to inform Africa CDC’s continental programs.
Ensuring Ethical and Equitable Outcomes
Operating under principles of transparency, accountability, and scientific integrity, ASAG will function as an independent advisory mechanism. While the Africa CDC retains final decision-making power, the group’s insights are expected to drive the innovation necessary to deliver equitable health outcomes for all Africans.
