The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the composition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s newly released 2027 campaign council, questioning the inclusion of individuals who have faced corruption allegations and financial misconduct cases.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and signed by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the campaign council as a platform that appears to accommodate individuals with unresolved questions over corruption and public accountability.
The party particularly questioned the inclusion of former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu and former NSITF Chairman Ngozi Olejeme.
Edu was suspended by President Tinubu following controversy over an attempted N585 million transfer into a private account, while Olejeme has faced EFCC prosecution over alleged financial misconduct.
ADC Questions Status of Corruption Cases
The ADC said the inclusion of the two former officials raises questions about what has happened to the cases involving them.
“If they have been cleared, the government should show how and when and by whom they were cleared,” the party said.
It accused the administration of allowing investigations into alleged financial crimes to quietly disappear, only for some of those involved to later return to political relevance.
The party said such developments create the impression that corruption allegations can be overlooked when individuals become politically useful.
“Under this government, corruption allegations increasingly appear to have an expiry date,” the ADC said.
Party Says 2027 Will Test Tinubu’s Record
The ADC also described the 2027 election as a referendum on President Tinubu’s performance, arguing that the campaign would ultimately be judged against the economic realities faced by Nigerians.
The party said the President’s political allies would not be able to campaign away the hardship Nigerians are experiencing.
“The President may assemble his old friends and political allies, including those carrying unresolved corruption questions, but all of their collective brooms cannot sweep away the grave pains they have brought on the Nigerian people,” the statement said.
According to the ADC, Nigerians are still dealing with the high cost of living and widespread poverty, while people connected to government continue to enjoy what it described as excessive privileges.
ADC Restates Fuel Subsidy Proposal
The party also restated its support for a targeted fuel subsidy intervention, arguing that subsidising production could help reduce pump prices and ease the pressure on households.
The ADC said its proposed intervention would be capped, budgeted and independently audited, with every naira accounted for.
“Our proposal is straightforward: every naira must be traceable and every barrel accounted for,” the party said.
The ADC also challenged the Tinubu administration to account for what it described as wasteful government spending, questioning why the government says it cannot afford to support struggling Nigerians while resources continue to be spent on other areas.
