The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is facing intense backlash after blocking senior officials of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from visiting the detained former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
The political standoff escalated dramatically at the anti-graft agency’s Abuja headquarters, drawing sharp condemnation from opposition figures who accuse the federal government of weaponizing state institutions to intimidate dissenting voices.
Armed Security Forces Storm ICPC Headquarters
The controversy unfolded when a high-powered ADC delegation, including National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Policy and Manifesto Committee Secretary Mallam Salihu Lukman, arrived at the ICPC facility. Despite formal prior communications requesting a visitation, party leaders were abruptly turned away without explanation.
The situation grew volatile when three truckloads of armed police officers suddenly deployed to the premises, creating a tense atmosphere that opposition leaders described as a deliberate tactic of psychological warfare.
ADC Condemns Alleged State Intimidation
In a strongly worded statement reacting to the incident, the African Democratic Congress slammed the security lockdown, characterizing it as a panicked overreaction by the state. The opposition party argued that the massive deployment of armed forces against unarmed political stakeholders sends a dangerous signal about the health of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The heavy deployment, which appeared entirely unnecessary and disproportionate to the peaceful presence of unarmed political leaders, created the unmistakable impression that the authorities feared that the mere presence of opposition leaders at the Commission could trigger public outrage,” the ADC stated in an official release. “It is deeply troubling that a simple request by senior party officials to visit a detained colleague was met, not with professionalism, but with a show of force more suited to the suppression of civil unrest.”
Growing Anxiety Over El-Rufai’s Health and Wellbeing
The denial of access has amplified fears regarding the welfare of the former governor, who voluntarily surrendered to the anti-graft agency. Family members have repeatedly sounded the alarm over harsh detention conditions, alleging that basic constitutional rights are being systematically violated.
The ADC highlighted recent public outcries from El-Rufai’s wife, Hajiya Asia El-Rufai, who revealed that she was blocked from delivering food to her husband and that he has been repeatedly denied vital medical attention. The party further alleged that the commission is actively frustrating court-ordered medical access through administrative obstruction and arbitrary protocols.
Demands for Immediate Access and Rule of Law
While the ICPC has publicly maintained that its detention protocols strictly adhere to standard regulations, the opposition coalition remains unconvinced. The ADC contends that the ongoing isolation of the prominent politician suggests a strategy of punishment by process aimed at breaking the spirit of key opposition figures ahead of future political cycles.
Reiterating that El-Rufai is not a fugitive, the ADC issued an ultimatum to the anti-graft body to restore constitutional rights to the detainee. The party warned that the eyes of both local citizens and the international community are fixed on Abuja, demanding that the ICPC immediately grant unrestricted access to El-Rufai’s family, lawyers, physicians, and political associates to clear the air of perceived political persecution.
