In a major push to combat poverty and vulnerability, ActionAid Nigeria, alongside key civil society partners, has officially launched the European Union-funded European Union Support for Strengthening Social Protection in Nigeria (ESSPIN) Project.
The landmark initiative aims to reinforce and streamline the country’s existing social safety nets, ensuring that support reaches Nigeria’s most marginalized populations, including women, children, and persons living with disabilities.
A United Front for Social Security
The high-profile launch event brought together a diverse coalition of government bodies, international donors, and civil society organizations. Key stakeholders in attendance included representatives from the European Union, the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
Crucial technical and implementation partners were also present, notably the State Operations Coordinating Unit (SOCU) and the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), signaling a deeply collaborative approach to reforming the nation’s welfare distribution systems.
Empowering the Most Vulnerable
To ensure the project remains inclusive and grassroots-driven, ActionAid Nigeria is executing the initiative in close partnership with the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) and the Okaha Women and Children Development Organisation (OWACDO). This strategic alliance guarantees that the specific needs of historically underserved demographics are prioritized from day one.
With the official rollout of the ESSPIN project, partners and development advocates are optimistic that the initiative will bridge critical gaps in policy execution, leading to a more transparent, effective, and sustainable social protection framework across Nigeria.
