Abia State House of Assembly has passed the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities bill into law.
The Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, made this announcement during a plenary session.
congratulating his colleagues he assured them of the 7th Assembly’s commitment to promoting people-oriented bills.
Orji noted that once the bill, is assented to by the Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, it will come into force.
However, The sponsor and Deputy Majority Leader of the bill, Paul Taribo, described it as a landmark that would go a long way in placing the destiny of persons living with disabilities in their hands.
Taribo expressed gratitude to the Speaker and other members of the House for their efforts in ensuring the passage.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), David Anyaele, who had been fighting for the welfare of persons with disabilities, applauded the lawmakers for the passage.
Anyaele described the passage as a strong demonstration by the lawmakers that all lives are precious, in particular the lives of residents with disabilities, noting that the passage of the bill is the end of exclusion for Abia residents living with disabilities.
