In a joint operation, the Nigerian Embassy and a Senegalese NGO, “Free the Slaves” (La Lumiere), have rescued 24 Nigerian girls from sexual exploitation in Senegal. The girls, mostly underage (11-24 years old), were trafficked from Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, and Plateau states through Cotonou, Benin Republic, and Mali to Senegal’s Tamaccounda and Kedougou Regions.
According to Acting Ambassador Salihu Abubakar, 22 girls were repatriated weeks ago, while the last two arrived in Nigeria on Saturday. The embassy and NGO have strengthened their partnership to combat human trafficking, with a goal to prevent the trafficking of Nigerian girls for prostitution worldwide.
The successful rescue and repatriation demonstrate the power of international cooperation in fighting human trafficking. The envoy did not disclose the victims’ health status or duration of their exploitation. However, the rescue mission marks a significant step towards protecting Nigerian girls from sexual exploitation and human trafficking.”
