The member representing former Governor Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari’s constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The announcement of Mr. Hassan’s departure from the APC was made during Thursday’s plenary session by the Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, coinciding with the presentation of the 2026 proposed budget by Governor Dauda Lawal.
Mr. Hassan, representing Mafara North, cited deepening crises and poor leadership within the APC at both local government and state levels as his reasons for switching parties. His defection is seen as a significant political shift in the constituency and a blow to the influence of former Governor Yari, who had previously contested unsuccessfully for Senate President.
In his formal exit, Mr. Hassan instructed ward leadership to treat his letter as official notice and confirmed that copies were sent to both the Zamfara State APC chairman and the Talata Mafara Local Government APC chairman.
Political analysts say this move could reshape party dynamics in Zamfara State ahead of future elections, signaling growing momentum for the PDP in areas once considered APC strongholds.
