The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting press freedom and strengthening democratic accountability as journalists across the globe marked World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement issued on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government congratulated media practitioners for their role in sustaining democracy.
Press Freedom as a Pillar of Democracy
The governor emphasised that a free press remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy, noting that it plays a crucial role in giving voice to citizens, holding leaders accountable, and bridging the gap between government and the public.
The 2026 theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” was described as a timely reminder of the media’s responsibility in fostering peace, strengthening institutions, and driving sustainable development.
“Today presents yet another opportunity for us to deliberate, review our progress over time, and reassess the level of commitment, particularly among key stakeholders, to the true ideals of press freedom,” Omotoso quoted the governor as saying.
Call for Professionalism and Ethical Reporting
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the evolving information landscape places greater responsibility on the media, especially amid ongoing reforms across different levels of government.
“More than ever, the current realities in our country make it imperative for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to remain committed to objective, balanced, and professional reporting that critically examines government policies while ensuring accountability in a fair and unbiased manner,” he said.
Government Commitment to Transparency
The state government reaffirmed its dedication to promoting transparency, openness, and constructive engagement with the media, noting that an informed society is vital for peace, security, and inclusive development.
“We firmly believe that a well-informed society is fundamental to peace, security, and inclusive development. At the same time, the media must continue to discharge its responsibilities without fear or favour,” the governor added.
Rising Threats to Media Integrity
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted growing challenges facing the media, including misinformation, disinformation, economic pressures, and safety concerns for journalists, warning that these issues pose risks to national stability and development.
He called for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners, and civil society to safeguard the integrity of the information ecosystem, especially as Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle.
“The role of the media becomes even more critical during electioneering. All actors must uphold the principles of ethical journalism, fairness, and national interest,” he stated.
Support for Media Development and Protection
The governor underscored the need for sustained investment in media literacy, support for ethical journalism, and the creation of an enabling environment for press freedom.
“I wish to assure you that the Lagos State Government will continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom, protect journalists, and strengthen democratic accountability,” Sanwo-Olu said.
World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and evaluate its state globally.
