Communities in Jigawa State have developed emergency response plans to improve preparedness for floods and other disasters, with support from UNICEF and its partners.
According to UNICEF Nigeria, the initiative is aimed at helping vulnerable families stay safe, protect children, and strengthen community resilience against recurring natural disasters in the state.
The organisation disclosed this in a statement shared on its official social media platform, noting that the intervention is being implemented with support from the government, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and funding from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations.
“Communities in Jigawa State now have an emergency response plan to prepare for floods and other disasters,” UNICEF stated.
The agency added that the collaborative effort is designed to ensure that families are better equipped to respond during emergencies while reducing the impact of disasters on children and other vulnerable groups.
Strengthening Community Resilience
Flooding remains one of the major environmental challenges affecting several communities across Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season. In recent years, Jigawa State has experienced repeated flooding incidents that displaced residents, destroyed farmlands, and disrupted livelihoods.
Through the emergency response initiative, UNICEF and its partners are supporting local communities with preparedness strategies, awareness campaigns, and coordinated response mechanisms to minimise risks during disasters.
The organisation said the programme would also contribute to building long-term resilience among families and communities across the state.
