Tinubu has congratulated the winners of the by-elections held across five constituencies in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, urging them to justify the confidence of their constituents through diligent and effective representation.
The by-elections were conducted on Saturday, September 19, 2026, across the four states, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Commission lists the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, two constituencies in Bauchi, the Udu State Constituency in Delta and the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano among the contests conducted during the exercise.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu congratulated the successful candidates and commended voters and security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five seats contested, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured one seat.
APC Wins Four of Five Seats Across Four States
The APC candidates declared winners were Kallamu MaiJama’a, who won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Husseini Datti, who won the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Okolosi Ator, who emerged victorious in the Udu State Constituency in Delta State; and Yakubu Ali, who won the Disina State Constituency in Bauchi State.
Adamu Yakubu of the APM won the Sakwa State Constituency seat in Bauchi State, accounting for the only seat not won by the APC in the five constituencies.
Tinubu said the victories recorded by APC candidates demonstrated what he described as continued confidence in the party’s capacity to govern effectively and deliver shared prosperity.
He also linked the outcome to what he described as grassroots support for the reforms being implemented by his administration.
“I am encouraged by the support Nigerians at the grassroots continue to show for our party and for the difficult but necessary reforms our administration has implemented over the past three years,” Tinubu said.
He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast and not be swayed by what he described as political opportunism, saying the benefits of the reforms would become increasingly evident as the administration enters what he called the next phase of its programme.
Tinubu also called on the winners to justify the confidence placed in them by their constituents through diligent and effective representation.
He urged the other candidates who contested the seats to accept the outcomes in good faith and continue contributing to the democratic process.
Tinubu Urges INEC to Address Shortcomings Ahead of 2027
The Tinubu administration also commended voters and security agencies for their roles in maintaining peace and order during the by-elections.
Tinubu applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting the polls, following the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The by-elections form part of INEC’s 2026 electoral activities, with the Commission also listing the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections and the February 6, 2027 governorship and State House of Assembly elections on its official election calendar.
Tinubu urged INEC to build on what he described as the progress recorded during the by-elections while addressing any shortcomings ahead of future elections.
He particularly pointed to the need for improvements ahead of the 2027 general elections, which are scheduled for January and February.
The call places further attention on the electoral commission’s preparation for the next cycle of elections, as political parties and candidates continue their preparations for the 2027 polls.
Tinubu also urged the newly elected lawmakers to focus on the responsibilities that come with their mandates and ensure effective representation of their constituents.
The winners are expected to assume their legislative responsibilities following the conclusion of the electoral process, while other contestants have been urged to remain engaged in the democratic process.
