President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel, with pay increases ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent across different ranks.
The approval was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said the new salary package will take effect from September 1, 2026, and benefit about 250,000 personnel in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Under the new arrangement, officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier-generals, major-generals, lieutenant-generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
The adjustment is expected to raise the annual salary bill for armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion, as the Federal Government moves to improve the welfare of military personnel.
Military Personnel Get New Pay Structure
Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent salary increase, while those from private to staff sergeant will enjoy an 80 per cent salary boost.
President Tinubu said members of the armed forces who work to protect Nigerians deserve support and appreciation for their sacrifices, particularly as they confront security challenges across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” President Tinubu said.
He added that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their responsibilities.

President Tinubu said no nation can achieve greatness without security, stressing that the government would continue to mobilise military and law enforcement assets to tackle threats and protect lives and property.
He urged members of the armed forces to see the salary increase as a sign of appreciation for their service to the nation.
The President assured that his administration would remain committed to improving the welfare of security personnel while providing the necessary support to strengthen national security.
