The Federal Government has formally commended Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, for his aggressive expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), marking a significant milestone in the state’s post-insurgency recovery and economic development.
The commendation follows the graduation of 3,000 trainees from nine Vocational Enterprise Institutes and Centres across Borno State, a move seen as a strategic blueprint for tackling youth unemployment in the Northeast.
A Model for Youth Empowerment
Speaking on the achievement, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, lauded the initiative as a decisive step toward equipping young Nigerians with the practical tools needed for the modern job market.
To ensure the graduates hit the ground running, the state government provided each participant with essential starter packs and a ₦100,000 entrepreneurship grant to facilitate their transition into independent business owners.
“This initiative is a major step toward empowering young Nigerians with practical and employable skills,” Dr. Alausa stated. “It aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which prioritises youth empowerment and economic inclusion through rigorous skills development.”
National TVET Overhaul
The Minister further revealed that the Federal Government is currently scaling up its own nationwide TVET framework. This federal program aims to provide 250,000 training opportunities, with over 180,000 youths already enrolled in various centers across the country.
The new educational model shifts away from traditional classroom-heavy learning, instead emphasizing a ratio of 80 percent practical training to 20 percent theoretical instruction.
Bridging the Industry Gap
To ensure these skills translate into long-term careers, Dr. Alausa disclosed that a national TVET job portal is currently under development. This digital platform is designed to connect skilled graduates directly with relevant industries, support artisans with access to affordable loans, and provide a database for certified professionals across various sectors.
The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to using vocational training as the primary engine for economic growth and national stability.
