The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) awarded journalists and others who have distinguished themselves in the society.
The award ceremony which took place at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos also saw two distinguished Nigerians prof. Attahiru Jega and Mrs Bimbo Oloyede receive honorary awards for their roles in fighting corruption and excellent practice in journalism.
The award categories, which has 130 entries was divided into six, out of which 12 journalists emerged for the commendation, runner-up and winners recognition.
The categories are; print, television, radio, online, photo and editorial.
For the online category, Emmanuel Ogala of Premium Times carried the day while Fisayo Soyombo of The Cable emerged runner-up and Bassey Udo also of Premium Times was commended for his entry.
Adekunle Yusuf of The Nation was announced winner for the print category and he also received a commendation for his double entry while Motunrayo Joel of Punch came second.
Asukwo Etim of Business Day won the editorial cartoon award while Emenike Cornelius emerged just behind him as runner up.
Ikechukwu Uche of Daily Trust and Sumner Shagari Sambo of Television Continental was awarded as winners of the photo and television categories respectively.
Other recognition include Kikelomo Abosede who was commended for her effort in the radio section, Odusanya Odutayo, runner-up in the photo category and Ayodele Ojo who received a commendation for his photo entry.
The most coveted Investigative journalist of the year award was scooped by Emmanuel Ogala of Premium Times with his entry; Investigation: Jonathan, Allison Madueke, Tunde Ayeni named in fraudulent oil contracts that cost Nigeria billions.
In a surprise award which took him in awe, Yakubu Afuye, a staff of the centre who have served for 10 years was also presented a plaque for his commitment over the years.
Earlier at the event, WSCIJ Board Chairman Prof. Ropo Sekoni charged journalist to stand up against unlawful tendencies of the power that be as the centre is emboldened to promote investigative journalism in the country.
