In a significant move for regional healthcare governance, a high-level delegation from the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) met with Ivorian officials this week to finalize the agency’s historic move to Abidjan.
Executing the ECOWAS Mandate
The working session, led by WAHO Director-General Dr. Melchior Aïssi and the Ivorian Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, Mr. Pierre Dimba, marks the operational kickoff of a transition first sanctioned by the ECOWAS Heads of State Conference in December 2025.
The meeting served as a strategic roadmap for the institutional deployment of the regional health agency, shifting its primary operations to the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire to better serve the bloc’s health security needs.
Logistics and Administrative Readiness
Discussions centered on the technical milestones required for a seamless transition. Key priority areas included are infrastructure and logistics, administrative transition, and strategic collaboration.
“This meeting is more than a logistical briefing; it is the realization of a strategic vision,” said Dr. Melchior Aïssi. “Our focus is on ensuring a smooth and efficient establishment that allows WAHO to accelerate public health programs, particularly in epidemic response and Universal Health Coverage, without missing a beat.”
Strengthening Regional Health Security
The relocation is expected to foster deeper cooperation between the agency and the Ivorian government, specifically targeting the acceleration of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiatives across the ECOWAS region. By establishing its headquarters in Abidjan, WAHO aims to leverage Côte d’Ivoire’s infrastructure to enhance regional epidemic preparedness and streamline health policy coordination among member states.
