The Presidential Working Group (PWG) on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. WAT.
The extension, according to the group, is aimed at giving Nigerians and other stakeholders more time to prepare and submit detailed contributions to the proposed legislation.
More Time for Stakeholder Input
In a statement signed on Friday by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, the group said the additional time would allow interested individuals, institutions and organisations to make well-considered contributions.
Gbajabiamila said the working group remained committed to ensuring that the development of the bill was based on broad consultation and informed contributions from Nigerians and relevant stakeholders.
“The Presidential Working Group is committed to ensuring that the process of developing the National Policing Bill benefits from broad consultation and the informed perspectives of Nigerians and relevant stakeholders,” Gbajabiamila said.
He explained that the proposed legislation is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for an effective policing system that can respond to Nigeria’s changing security needs.
According to him, the framework would also include safeguards for accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Stakeholders Urged to Submit Memoranda
Gbajabiamila encouraged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public to use the extended deadline to submit their views.
He said the significance of the proposed reform to policing and internal security made it necessary to give stakeholders more opportunity to provide substantive and technically sound contributions.
“All submissions must be made on or before 5:00 p.m. WAT on Friday, August 21, 2026, exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com,” he stated.
Key Issues Under Consideration
The working group said stakeholder contributions would help address critical areas in the proposed policing framework, including sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction and inter-agency coordination.
Other areas include accountability mechanisms and safeguards against political interference or abuse.
Gbajabiamila said these issues made broad stakeholder engagement essential to developing a policing framework that is effective, accountable, sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across Nigeria.
He appreciated stakeholders who had already submitted their memoranda and encouraged others who intend to participate to take advantage of the extension.
The working group, he said, would subsequently present a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for onward legislative processing.
