President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded the names of 32 additional ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, just days after submitting the first batch of three nominees.
In two separate letters addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President requested the Senate to expeditiously consider and confirm 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors. The lists include four women among the career ambassadors and six women among the non-career appointees.
The non-career ambassadorial nominees include prominent figures such as Barrister Ogbonnaya Kalu from Abia, former presidential aide; Reno Omokri from Delta; former INEC chairman Mahmud Yakubu; former Ekiti First Lady Erelu Angela Adebayo; and former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Other nominees are former Katsina House of Assembly Speaker Tasiu Musa Maigari, former Plateau State Commissioner and ex-deputy executive secretary of UBEC Yakubu N. Gambo, Professor Nora Ladi Daduut, Otunba Femi Pedro, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, Barrister Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, and former First Lady of Oyo, Fatima Florence Ajimobi.
Several nominees also come from the political and business sectors, including former Lagos Commissioner Lola Akande, former Adamawa Senator Grace Bent, former Abia Governor Victor Okezie Ikpeazu, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo State, and the former ambassador to the Holy See, Paul Oga Adikwu.
The career ambassadorial nominees include Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Miamuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa), Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi), Syndoph Paebi Endoni (Bayelsa), Chima Geoffrey Lioma David (Ebonyi), Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun), Abimbola Samuel Reuben (Ondo), Yvonne Ehinosen Odumah (Edo), Hamza Mohammed Salau (Niger), Shehu Barde (Katsina), Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), Muhammad Saidu Dahiru (Kaduna), Olatunji Ahmed Sulu Gambari (Kwara), and Wahab Adekola Akande (Osun).
The nominees are expected to be posted to countries with which Nigeria maintains strong bilateral relations, including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya, as well as to international organizations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union. Confirmed ambassadors will receive their specific postings after Senate approval.
Last week, the President submitted three ambassadorial nominees Ambassador Ayodele Oke (Oyo), Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu (Jigawa), and Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (Ogun) who are slated for postings to the United Kingdom, the United States, or France once confirmed.
President Tinubu stated that more ambassadorial nominations would be announced in the near future as part of his administration’s effort to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic network.
