Dotun Oladipo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, owner of Eagle Online, died at age 56.
Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, according to a statement by the General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Nkanu Egbe.
The news was also announced on the Eagle Online website on Wednesday.
The publication said Oladipo was in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly took ill at his office.
His death came as a shock to his colleagues, friends and associates.
Colleagues Confirm Death
The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Danlami Nmodu, also confirmed Oladipo’s death on the guild’s WhatsApp platform.
Oladipo had previously served as president of the guild and was later recognised as its emeritus president.
“It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today,” Nmodu wrote.
“May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
Egbe, in his statement, described Oladipo’s death as a major loss to the cooperative and the journalism profession.
“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56,” he said.
According to Egbe, Oladipo combined his leadership role in the cooperative with a journalism career that lasted nearly three decades.
“Mr Oladipo led our cooperative with dedication, alongside a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades. His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole,” he said.
He added that details of the funeral arrangements and other matters would be announced later.
Sowore Pays Tribute
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, joined others in mourning the journalist.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Sowore described Oladipo as a “complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being.”
“Dotun Oladipo has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community of digital journalists in Nigeria,” he wrote.
“May Dotun Oladipo rest in power!”
Journalism Career
Oladipo was a veteran journalist who worked in several major Nigerian newsrooms before establishing Eagle Online.
He served as Politics Editor at PUNCH Newspapers and was also a member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
After leaving PUNCH, he worked with several media organization ranging from Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before founding Eagle Online.
He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
Following news of his death, journalists and other professional colleagues took to social media to pay tribute to the publisher, describing him as a humble and thorough professional.
